Symposium: Global Soil Biodiversity: A Common Ground for Sustainability

The International Year of Soils 2015 is coming to an end and it has been an amazing year of soil-related events. With the release of the first Global Soil Biodiversity Atlas planned for early in the new year, the global Soil Biodiversity Initiative proposes to make 2016 the Year of the Atlas! The GSBI will be hosting a launch event in Washington DC on Feb 14, 2016, in combination with a symposium Global Soil Biodiversity: A Common Ground for Sustainability

Soil zoologists have long been studying taxonomy, evolution, ecology and ecosystem functioning of soil animals. Now there are substantial number of evidences that not only soil microorganisms but also soil animals are major players of supporting vital soil, so considering how to conserve soil animals and hence improve soil quality are urgent needs for sustainable soil management. Already more than 200 abstracts have been submitted to these colloquia by the scientists from 32counties.
IUSS Division 2 (Chair Prof. K. Inubushi, Chiba University) kindly supported the young scientists from developing countries to attend this meeting.
On the last day (26 August), we will have a joint symposium by ICSZ and ICA as a outreach of our recent advancement of soil zoology and Apterygota biology.

SOMmic - Microbial Contribution and Impact on Soil Organic Matter, Structure and Genesis

Contents and aims:
There is increasing evidence that microbial bio- and necromass are significant parts of SOM, interacting with soil minerals. The control of SOM forming processes via microbial activity and community dynamics in dependence on biodiversity and functional redundancy is largely unknown. Omics technologies and chemical analysis of complex mixtures, multi-isotope approaches and imaging techniques offer new research opportunities. Also latest modelling approaches, e.g. in systems ecology and environmental thermodynamics, open up new vistas to study the outlined topic. We invite presentations on recent findings, methodological challenges, and innovative concepts to the workshop and expect inspiring discussion.
Workshop structure and invited speaker
From Wednesday, Nov. 9, 1 pm until Friday, Nov. 11, 12 am, we will have five sessions and five keynote speakers:
• Significant boundary conditions, micro-habitats and micro-habitat properties, processes of succession, and systems fluctuations – what can we learn from the marine microbial pump concept?
• Who are the relevant actors and drivers and in which micro-habitats or „hot spots“ do they appear?
• Molecular processes and components interacting with SOM and soil minerals – turnover steady state or residual `inert´ material?
• What is the contribution of methods and modelling approaches from systems biology/ecology to understanding SOM in the soil system?
• Modelling approaches for the integration of process components.

The improvement of analytical techniques and the substantial increase in the number of laboratories with the instrumentation required to perform isotopic measurements have boosted the number of studies using stable isotopes.
Stable isotopes of C, N, and S, and recently of O bound to P in phosphate, are powerful tools to trace sources, track transfers, and understand abiotic and biological processes and transformations of nutrients in the environment. However, although the biogeochemical cycles of individual nutrients are closely coupled, only a limited number of studies has attempted to combine stable isotope analyses of multiple nutrient elements.
This combination of stable isotope analyses offers new opportunities to better understand the drivers and consequences of changes in nutrient stoichiometry across ecosystems. Advancing a coupled stable isotope research agenda in the important area of nutrient biogeochemistry is the opportunity we seek to exploit through the proposed conference.

Agrarian Professional School PROFAGRI, Battipaglia, Italy
For the World Soil Day a tribute to our most important terrestrial resource, the soil, is given. The seminar will be held at the agrarian professional school PROFAGRI of Battipaglia (Italy) and all the students of the school will be involved in this important project. The title of the seminar is “Soil is Alive”, and all aspects of interaction and communication between soil, microorganisms and plants will be analysed. The codification of this language is crucial to preserve the health of our planet.
